We are a newly formed youth volunteer service club and this seemed like a perfect event to jump start our community service.  Our group will be working within the community on various service projects, one of which is to help out sick children.  As the club’s adult sponsor and the aunt of a leukemia survivor, this is something to which I can relate.  My nephew, who is now 24, was diagnosed with ALL at the age of 2.  He was treated at MCV and assisted by the Children’s Miracle Network and to see him now, you would never know he ever had cancer.  He is a healty, walking, talking miracle and would not have lived to reach the age of 24 if it weren’t for the Children’s Miracle Network.  I am proud to get to participate in this event and to share with these young folks in the club the privilege of helping out these wonderful children and helping to give them a chance for a cure.  We are looking forward to participating.

My family and I want to try and give back to a community that has always been supportive and caring to us. I also want my daughters to know the value of working to help someone. I want them to know the value of giving something when you have so much to be thankful for and have so much!

Sharon Berg

Hello - my name is Sharon and I am volunteering to open this Lemonaid stand along with my “little sister”.  As an employee of Children’s Hospital of Richmond at VCU, in the Infant Services Program, I see young children who come through our doors with many needs.  As a volunteer with Big Brothers and Big Sisters, my little sister and I are seeking ways to “give back” to the community.  We are excited to have the opportunity to help children and their families who are dealing with cancer.

Each summer as our bible study group takes a break from meeting, we embark on a ‘summer of service’ with our kids.  We have done a variety of things, from cleaning up school yards to making cards for service members.  But our most popular event is the Anthem Lemonade Stand.  We pick a theme each year and we have decorations and we dress up.  The kids have fun and get to do something that helps other kids.  It’s a winning combination!

This is our 5th Annual LemonAid stand. Our school age children really enjoy decorating the Lemonade Stand and wearing their lemon hats to sell lemonade. Our Pre-K kids bake cookies for the event.  Additionally, they do a coin drive so that they can go out to purchase cups of lemonade on the day of the sale.

Ashlee Turner

My name is Ashlee Turner and I am the Assistant Director at the Village of Rainbow Station at Hanover Medical Park. I am working with our Club 5 group, which is our 5th-6th grade group in our school-age recreation program, for our Summer Camp 2012 program. We are excited to be a part of the Covey Leadership program and are working with our children in both our Preschool and School-Age Programs to become leaders! One of our goals to give back to the community and to help those in need. Our children are very excited to develop their leadership skills and find ways they can help others. They are thrilled to host a lemonade stand here on campus at Rainbow Station at Hanover Medical Park on July 20!!

Colonial Heights Youth Advisory Council first hosted a LemonAid Stand in 2008 as a “fun raising” and fund raising activity for the Dog Days of Summer. Also, one of our members was in a terrible accident during her middle school years, and spent several months recovering at the Richmond Children’s Hospital. The members were very interested in doing a project to support the Children’s Hospital, as well as supporting Mandy (indirectly)!

We don’t know anyone who has battled childhood cancer but my family still has a heart for kids who are facing sickness and we want to come alongside and support them in any way we can.

My 8 year old loves to help other children and she is always looking for things to do to raise money for sick kids. She wants them to be healthy and happy like her.
